Top edge chapter 46

An unknown silence surrounded the two of them, and Klet interrupted Shen Siwei’s thoughts, saying, “Could his target be me?”

“But don’t you find it strange?” Shen Siwei crossed his arms and frowned, contemplating, “He asked me twice if I had any news about you, and I said no. If his target is you, why hasn’t he taken any action?”

Klet replied, “Perhaps he’s waiting for the right moment.”

Shen Siwei shook his head and said, “That’s not it.”

There was a big problem here: Moran couldn’t monitor Shen Siwei’s actions.

The only place where cameras could be installed in Shen Siwei’s body was his eyes, but he was certain that his eyes were not mechanical prosthetics. The tactile sensation and feedback confirmed that his eyes were his.

Moreover, logically speaking, if Moran’s target was Klet, he could have arranged a more suitable task for Shen Siwei to directly find Klet. So why use Amor as a cover?

Shen Siwei and Klet met by chance in the ice field, and Moran couldn’t have planned for such an occurrence.

“I’ll think about it some more,” Shen Siwei said, rubbing his chin with one hand and lowering his gaze to organize his thoughts. “First, we can be sure that Miller really wants to find Amor.”

Amor had indeed left the Life Tree, and Adolf had mentioned that his younger brother was reckless.

If the entire mission was aimed at Klet, would Miller, Adolf, and Amor all be acting in coordination with Moran? That clearly didn’t make sense.

Therefore, from beginning to end, the target of the mission was Amor.

“But as you saw,” Klet lowered his chin and pointed to the bullet casing on the ground, “the person who fired the shots couldn’t be Amor. He must have already been taken back.”

“I just thought of something,” Shen Siwei frowned. “Moran once said that he didn’t want to wake me up for something like this, he thought it was a waste of resources.”

“What does that mean? Didn’t he plan to wake you up eventually?” Klet asked.

“Yes,” Shen Siwei said, as he spoke, his mind suddenly became clear. “It was Miller’s idea for me to carry out this mission.”

Moran had shown pessimism more than once, believing that Amor had no chance of survival. And he had also mentioned that if it weren’t for Amor being Miller’s son, he wouldn’t have sent Shen Siwei on this mission.

In other words, Moran originally didn’t want to send Shen Siwei down, but he couldn’t disobey Miller’s orders.

“So Miller doesn’t know that Amor has been taken back?” klet asked.

This statement completed the missing logic, and Shen Siwei completely clarified his thoughts.

“Moran is concealing this fact, he hasn’t informed Miller,” Shen Siwei said. “Perhaps he told Miller that even deploying elite forces couldn’t find Amor. But Miller didn’t believe him and insisted on waking me up to execute this mission.”

“But why would he conceal it?” Klet furrowed his brow. “Isn’t he afraid his subordinates will expose it?”

Shen Siwei fell silent, his gaze lowered to the body on the ground, his expression serious as he said, “It can only mean that something unexpected happened to Amor.”

“He can’t explain it, so he decided to keep it a secret,” Klet said. “And his subordinates are also involved, so no one dares to speak up.”

“Do you have any other possibilities?” Shen Siwei asked.

Klet shook his head.

In this way, it also explained why Shen Siwei discovered the traces of the task force in the self-service hotel but Moran didn’t tell him.

From the beginning, Moran knew this mission was meaningless, so he always secretly urged Shen Siwei to return if he couldn’t find anything.

But he didn’t want Shen Siwei to make a wasted trip and thought it would be good if they could capture Klet along the way.

“Speaking of your superior,” Klet suddenly said, “Isn’t he afraid you’ll become suspicious after seeing me?”

“He is confident of the fact that I can’t remember anything from the past.”

In fact, Shen Siwei hadn’t remembered anything, and his trust in Klet was purely based on intuition.

“And,” Shen Siwei continued, “he’s also not that diligent, so he probably doesn’t think that far ahead.”

Shen Siwei couldn’t provide specific examples, but in his subconscious, he always felt like there was a mission that went wrong due to Moran’s not carefully planned orders.

“What’s your plan now?” Klet asked.

The mission to find Amor had come to an end, and Shen Siwei couldn’t pretend he hadn’t discovered anything and stay by Klet’s side.

“I have to contact Moran,” he said.

“No, you can’t,” Klet immediately objected. “He’ll capture you again.”

“But when I don’t report back and he gets suspicious, he will indeed capture me,” Shen Siwei replied.

Klet frowned unhappily, but he seemed to realize that the problem had to be resolved and reluctantly sighed, “You shouldn’t have confronted him last time.”

Shen Siwei didn’t know the specifics of what happened last time, but hearing Klet say that, he naturally wouldn’t repeat the same mistake.

“Don’t worry,” he said.

Activating the communication function, he pressed the call button, and soon Moran’s voice came from the other side, saying, “Hello?”

“Colonel, it’s me,” Shen Siwei’s tone was no different from usual. “I found the body of Amor’s lover.”

“Oh?” Moran’s voice sounded normal as well. “Where?”

“In the stairwell of the technology building,” Shen Siwei said. “But I didn’t find any traces of Amor nearby.”

There was a brief moment of silence on the other side, and when Moran’s voice resumed, it carried a hint of unnaturalness, “Then where would Amor go?”

Normally, upon hearing the word “body,” one would be curious about what had happened. But Moran seemed completely uninterested, and instead, he was more concerned about whether Shen Siwei knew Amor’s whereabouts.

“I suspect,” Shen Siwei paused and spoke the prepared words, “that they had an argument and Amor killed him.”

“Amor…” Moran blurted out but immediately slowed down his pace. “He’s capable of killing, too.”

He probably intended to phrase it as a question, but it turned into an exclamation.

“When someone is pushed to the limit, it’s possible,” Shen Siwei didn’t know Amor well, so it was normal for him to make such a speculation. And if Moran felt guilty, he naturally wouldn’t correct Shen Siwei.

Shen Siwei glanced at Klet and both of them waited quietly for Moran’s reaction.

“True,” Moran’s following words relieved them. “Since his lover is already dead, he should return to the Tree of Life soon. There’s no need for you to continue searching, just come back.”

Until now, Moran hadn’t mentioned the issue of the shell casing. He must have assumed that Shen Siwei hadn’t noticed anything unusual, so he didn’t bring it up proactively.

“Why should I come back directly?” Shen Siwei continued the act. “Amor couldn’t have gone far. I can still find him quickly.”

This statement had no flaws. Since Shen Siwei had already found this place, why would he give up halfway?

Moran hesitated for a moment and then compromised, saying, “Alright.”

The tense nerves finally relaxed, However, when he hung up the communicator, Klet had a dark face and looked at him, asking, “Were you just acting cute with him?”

Shen Siwei: “…”

After hanging up the communicator, Moran stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking at the night view outside, and dialed Dr. Chen’s phone.

The call alert sounded only once before it was answered. Dr. Chen cautiously said, “Colonel?”

“Your research still has room for improvement,” Moran said indifferently.

“What… research?” Dr. Chen asked.

“Shen Siwei,” Moran said, “why can you only alter his memory? His personality is still disobedient.”

“Is something wrong?” Dr. Chen asked hesitantly.

“It’s nothing major,” Moran’s tone was flat. “What I want is complete obedience. He was perfectly obedient when he just woke up. But now, he’s starting to question me again, which means his nature hasn’t changed.”

“It’s difficult to control personality…” Dr. Chen said with difficulty, “I can only study it further when he returns.”

“Okay,” Moran paused and added, “But he has become good at acting cute. Keep that in mind for the next improvement.”

Klet walked upstairs without looking back, ignoring Shen Siwei’s words.

“That’s not acting cute,” Shen Siwei followed behind Klet, acutely aware of the huge difference in their leg lengths. “Do you think I’m capable of acting cute?”

Klet still didn’t turn around.

As the distance between them grew larger, Shen Siwei decided to stop and frowned, looking upward. “If you keep going, I’ll turn back now.”

Finally, the long-legged Klet stopped as well.

“I don’t like the way you talk to other people,” Klet turned around, still with an unfavorable expression on his face, and his voice sounded even lower.

But Shen Siwei wouldn’t let Klet throw a tantrum. He coldly responded, “I don’t like immature men.”

Klet: “…”

The two of them stood in a stalemate on the stairs for a moment, but ultimately, Klet was the first to relent. He returned obediently to face Shen Siwei and asked, “What will happen if you don’t go back?”

“I don’t know,” Shen Siwei lifted his legs and started walking upstairs. “But since Moran trusts me so much, he will make sure I return.”

Suddenly, Klet grabbed Shen Siwei’s wrist from behind and asked, “Do you trust me?”

Seeing Klet being so serious, Shen Siwei was a bit puzzled, but he still answered, “I trust you.”

“Malken is a talented mechanic. Maybe he can take a look at your body and figure out what’s going on.”

Shen Siwei wasn’t familiar with Malken. In his memory, he had only met him once in the ice fields.

Although he trusted Klet, he couldn’t be as confident about others.

“And his mentor is the Old Ghost. Even if he can’t figure anything out, the Old Ghost should have a way.”

This statement slightly moved Shen Siwei.

He had indeed seen the Old Ghost, and she was truly capable.

“Also,” Klet continued, “I’ll introduce you to people from the Nightingale, like Avis and Knock. You’ve met them before, and they might help you recover your memories.”

“The Nightingale?” Shen Siwei pondered.

“Yes,” Klet said. “After the agreement is made public, we can’t stay out of it. You’ll definitely have to meet with them too.”

When Shen Siwei agreed to let Klet send the photo to the Nightingale, he had already made up his mind to stand with them.

Klet was right. Shen Siwei would eventually be involved with the Nightingale.

“But,” Shen Siwei suddenly thought of something, “Moran can monitor my location. If I meet with people from the Nightingale, won’t it cause trouble for them?”

Klet fell silent, realizing that it was indeed a problem.

“Wait,” Shen Siwei furrowed his brows and suddenly remembered something else. “You said my eyes would change color, right?”

Klet, inexplicably, replied, “They turn red when you kill.”

In Shen Siwei’s understanding, his eye color could only be controlled through the central console and wouldn’t change on its own.

And as for the magnetic particles on his face, no one had ever told him that he could manipulate them at will.

With that thought, Shen Siwei took out a dagger, tried to control the skin on his wrist, and cut it with the blade.

What happened next shocked Shen Siwei.

Blood actually flowed from his skin.

“I thought you couldn’t get hurt,” Klet asked in surprise.

It seemed that Shen Siwei’s guess was correct. He could indeed control the molecular materials within his skin, including magnetic particles and highly resilient molecules.

As long as he moved the magnetic particles away, his face would demagnetize. And as long as he moved the high polymers elsewhere, the skin in that area would regain its normal strength.

“I definitely need to get checked,” Shen Siwei used the dagger to remove the identity information card implanted in his wrist, which was the location tracker.

He let out a sigh and then looked at Klet. “Now we can go meet the Nightingale.”
