Don’t Ignite It chapter 58
I’m Sorry
Xia Yu held his breath for a moment.
He couldn’t understand why his brother brought up Lu Zhao at this moment.
His initial reaction was that his brother already knew about his relationship with Lu Zhao. However, Xia Jin’s expression was remarkably calm, which made him hesitate to speak.
His fingernails secretly scratched the door panel as his heart raced.
“Brother… What do you mean?” Xia Yu asked softly, clinging to a faint hope.
In fact, Xia Jin didn’t intend to confront Xia Yu so soon.
But he had suppressed his feelings for too long.
His younger brother had been deeply hurt by Lu Zhao, and he had just walked down the aisle together with Xu Zhan, getting married in front of many guests.
At that moment, Xia Jin sat in the crowd, and although he felt that the marriage was a bit hasty, he trusted Xu Zhan’s character. He thought that his little brother, Xia Yu, had finally escaped from his previous failed relationship. While their future life might not be extraordinarily romantic, at least it would be peaceful.
However, after three years of ups and downs, Xia Yu had once again fallen into the same trap.
It was utterly foolish.
At this point, Xia Jin finally showed a hint of anger. He questioned Xia Yu, “Do you and Xu Zhan think you’ve hidden it so well? You had a three-year marriage, and you both had extramarital affairs separately, divorced without telling us, and then came to confront us. Xia Yu, do you take marriage as a joke?”
His words were like a thunderclap that struck the ground.
Xia Yu froze in place.
He couldn’t utter a word, staring at Xia Jin in disbelief.
Xia Jin continued, “Xia Yu, I’m not heartless. If you can’t get along with Xu Zhan anymore and want a divorce, I won’t stop you. But now, tell me, who have you been seeing recently?”
In truth, Xia Jin didn’t need Xia Yu’s answer.
That time on Xia Yu’s birthday, he heard some noises in the middle of the night and cautiously went to check. From a distance, he saw his own brother hugging Lu Zhao.
On New Year’s Eve, just after celebrating Xia Yu’s birthday with Xu Zhan, their family, Xia Yu slipped out of the house and into the arms of the person who had hurt him the most.
Xia Jin stared at Xia Yu with a hint of weariness in his eyes.
He rarely felt this helpless.
Everything had gone smoothly in his own love life. He met his wife in college, dated for two years, and then entered the bonds of marriage. But when it came to Xia Yu, he sometimes didn’t know how to handle things.
He even felt a kind of rage within him, wanting to do what he did in a foreign hospital years ago and hit Lu Zhao hard in the face again.
“Why aren’t you speaking, Yu Yu?” he asked Xia Yu. “Tell me, who have you been dating recently?”
His brother already knew.
Those words echoed in Xia Yu’s mind. Even though the room was hot, he felt a chilling sensation throughout his body, and his fingertips were ice-cold.
He had prepared himself for the worst, but he never thought that his brother would already know about his extramarital affair, let alone that his lover was Lu Zhao.
He could hardly lift his head now, overwhelmed by a sense of shame. He knew that he could divorce Xu Zhan and even fall in love with someone else, but that someone couldn’t be Lu Zhao.
His brother had seen him utterly devastated three years ago, and his heart had ached for him. He even went to negotiate with Lu Zhao on his behalf.
He had done everything he could, but in the end, he still disappointed his older brother.
But he couldn’t lie to his brother either.
If he hadn’t given Lu Zhao a chance, it would be one thing, but he had.
On the very day he and Xu Zhan had agreed to divorce, he had allowed Lu Zhao to become his boyfriend.
Xia Yu’s body felt weak, and he had to lean against the door for support.
He looked at Xia Jin and confessed, “It’s Lu Zhao. After Xu Zhan and I decided to divorce, I’ve been with Lu Zhao.”
Xia Jin closed his eyes. He had known about Xia Yu and Lu Zhao being together for a while, but hearing his younger brother’s confession still made his head buzz.
He remained silent for a long time.
He should have reprimanded Xia Yu, acting like a strict and fierce parent, or even physically disciplined him to teach these two young kids a lesson about the harsh realities of life. But in the end, it all boiled down to three words.
Couldn’t let go.
When Xia Yu married Xu Zhan, Xu Ping had told him that her little brother was the apple of her eye. While outsiders might think that Xu Zhan was superior to Xia Yu, not inheriting the family’s profession and merely becoming a college teacher, Xu Ping saw her brother as the moon in the sky, shining gently and gracefully, perfectly fitting into their family and becoming her little brother.
Xia Jin, too, felt the same way.
Who could love Xia Yu more than him? He had cradled Xia Yu in his arms since he was a child, showing him off to everyone like a precious gem. When he came home from school, Xia Yu would eagerly run up to welcome him, his cute face radiating warmth and charm, melting everyone’s hearts with his smile.
Xia Jin gazed at Xia Yu, his usual composed and dignified self, the eldest son of the family. But now, he was just an older brother filled with helplessness.
“Xia Yu, I can approve of whoever you like, but not Lu Zhao,” he asked Xia Yu, “Do you think you have enough lives to gamble on Lu Zhao?”
When he thought of Xia Yu lying in the hospital bed like that one time, he even felt like killing Lu Zhao.
He looked at Xia Yu, who was on the verge of tears, and said, “Do you know how it feels to see my dearest brother being mistreated by someone else? Do you want me to experience the pain a second time?”
These words were like a knife to the heart.
Xia Yu, who had been enduring it all this time, finally let his tears fall. He looked at Xia Jin with teary eyes, too afraid to cry out loud, overwhelmed by guilt.
“I’m sorry, Brother,” he said softly. “I’m sorry.”
His voice choked with sobs, and he couldn’t even speak properly. His crying sounded particularly pitiful.
“You can scold me… or even hit me,” he cried, “I’m sorry.”
Xia Jin thought that if a good beating could solve the problem, it would be great.
He stood up, walked over to Xia Yu, and held him in his arms, patting his back and letting out a long sigh.
