Top edge chapter 64

Keep your word

klet himself was a fugitive, and people would believe he was the killer.

As for Shen Siwei, it would be said he pretended to marry Adolf but his real purpose was to bring down the upper class.

In the study, Adolf was chatting with the sheriff, but their conversation was abruptly interrupted when Shen Siwei and the other two appeared at the door. The room fell into a momentary silence.

“Rita, what are you doing?” Adolf quickly identified the obvious leader among them.

“I have something to say.” Rita walked at the front and entered the study, standing aside to make room for Shen Siwei and klet.

“What is it?” Perhaps sensing something amiss, Adolf furrowed his brows.

Rita calmly scanned everyone in the room and spoke, “Miller committed suicide.”

As the First Lady, her words carried weight, attracting the attention of the guards outside the study.

“Father had sleeping pills in his system. How could he have committed suicide?” Adolf’s tone turned bitter, clearly caught off guard by the unexpected turn of events.

“He has been feeling sick these past few days and asked for my sleeping pills,” Rita explained. “The pills are in our bedroom. If you don’t believe me, you can send someone to check.”

“It was you who said that Father couldn’t have committed suicide,” Adolf persisted.

“I just remembered the sleeping pills,” Rita replied calmly.

The sheriff in his white uniform glanced at Rita and then at Adolf, lowering his voice as he asked, “so what really happened?”

Adolf raised his hand to interrupt the sheriff, gesturing for him to stop talking. He then walked up to Rita, his expression emotionless, and asked, “Why didn’t you say that earlier?”

“I needed a witness,” Rita slightly raised her chin, meeting Adolf’s gaze despite his taller stature, displaying an unwavering demeanor.

“Are you suggesting that only an outsider can serve as your witness?” Adolf glanced at Shen Siwei and klet with displeasure.

“Why not?” Rita raised an eyebrow. “Adolf, you and I both know that there are many of your people inside this mansion.”

“As long as you know,” Adolf suddenly dropped his menacing expression, raised his voice, and said, “Take the lady away.”

As soon as the words left his mouth, a guard entered the room and grabbed Rita’s arm. “Madam, please come with me.”

Although the guard’s tone was respectful, his actions left no room for negotiation.

Rita frowned and said, “Let go.” However, the guard ignored her and it was Shen Siwei who reached out and held the guard’s wrist, reminding him with a slight use of force, “She told you to let go.”

,the guard’s expression immediately twisted out of pain.

At that moment, Adolf  squinted his eyes at Shen Siwei and asked, “How did you get so strong?”

Shen Siwei gave a gentle push, and the guard tumbled and rolled out of the study.

“You don’t need to worry about that.” Shen Siwei retracted his hand and said, “The witness is right here. Let’s conclude the case first.”

Any normal person could immediately see that blaming others wouldn’t work anymore. Adolf’s face slightly changed, and he shouted outside the room, “Guards!”

However, in the instant he opened his mouth, Shen Siwei had already transferred the magnetic particles in his skin to the palm of his hand, using magnetic force to draw away the sheriff’s gun from his waist.

The sound of the word “Guards” was drowned out by the gunshot, as a bullet flew past Adolf’s ear, freezing him in place with his mouth still open.

Dozens of guards rushed into the study, their dark guns aimed at Shen Siwei. But Shen Siwei remained calm and pointed his gun at Adolf, asking, “Can we have a proper conversation now?”

“What… What kind of monster are you?” Adolf seemed momentarily breathless, his voice now carrying a sense of surviving a disaster. He swallowed his saliva and said to the guards, “Leave us.”

“Master Adolf!” Adolf’s personal guard furrowed his brow and called out, clearly concerned about leaving Adolf here.

“I said leave, all of you.” Adolf looked at the gun pointed at him by Shen Siwei and said, “If he wanted to kill me, I would have already been dead.”

After the guards had left, Shen Siwei tossed the gun to klet and asked Adolf, “Do you still have doubts about the suicide?”

“The  letter can’t explain it.” Adolf finally spoke calmly, reasoning with Shen Siwei, “Father was not the type to repent. Obviously, someone forged his farewell letter.”

“It’s hard to say.” Shen Siwei returned the same words to Adolf without any changes. “You’re not him, so how do you know he wouldn’t repent?”

“He had no reason to commit suicide!” Adolf, gradually calming down, countered, “By trying to classify this as suicide, are you trying to make the Mag people feel guilty towards the civilians?”

Being born into a political family, Adolf quickly saw through Shen Siwei’s intentions.

But Shen Siwei returned the same argument to Adolf, “By trying to classify this as a murder, are you using this opportunity to reverse public opinion and get rid of your brother, who is competing for the family inheritance?”

Although Klet had no intention of competing for the inheritance, both Rita and Adolf seemed to have prejudged him as having such intentions.

Adolf realized that arguing from that perspective would not work, so he changed his approach and said, “If you want to convince everyone that Father committed suicide, you need to eliminate all doubts.”

At that point, Adolf began to focus on the facts.

Shen Siwei couldn’t help but find it amusing. He walked leisurely to the desk and looked at the frozen image on the tabletop screen, asking, “Is this the surveillance video from the corridor?”

There was no surveillance inside the study, but there were many cameras installed in the corridor.

Adolf took a step back, maintaining a distance from Shen Siwei, and said, “Yes.”

Shen Siwei asked again, “What time did Miller die?”

The security officer on the other side looked at the medical detector in his hand and said, “11:08 PM at night.”

Shen Siwei started playing the surveillance video. From Miller entering the study to Shen Siwei and others arriving, a total of three people entered the room.

The first person was Amor, at 9:35 PM. He stayed in the study for about ten minutes, presumably to greet Miller before going back to the lower level.

The second person was Adolf, at 10:43 PM. He came to Miller’s study wearing silk pajamas, stayed for less than five minutes, then left the study , went to the wine cellar to get a bottle of red wine, and then went to Shen Siwei’s room.

The third person was Miller’s personal assistant, at 11:14 PM. He clearly looked startled at the entrance of the study, hesitated to go in, looked around, presumably seeking help, but the guards were on the other side of the passage, so he chose to run outside and call for help.

Shen Siwei knew everything that happened afterward. He paused the video and said to Adolf, “You are the prime suspect, aren’t you?”

After all, Adolf was the last person seen by Miller before his death.

“When I left, Father was fine,” Adolf frowned. “This surveillance video can only prove that the murderer entered the study through the window.”

“Just because you say he was fine doesn’t mean he was,” Shen Siwei found it funny. “How can you prove that you didn’t kill him?”

“He called me to the study just to inform me about our engagement. I was wearing pajamas, where could I hide the rope to strangle him?” Adolf’s reason seemed convincing. The rope used to strangle Miller was made of coarse hemp, and Adolf certainly didn’t have such an item with him in the study.

Although it was possible that he had hidden the murder weapon in advance, now was not the time to delve into that. Shen Siwei shrugged and said, “Then it must have been suicide.”

“You!” Adolf looked furious but didn’t dare to explode. He suppressed his anger and said, “The suicide note clearly doesn’t sound like him, how do you explain that?”

“If it wasn’t suicide,” Shen Siwei said, “then the murderer is either you or Amor, or both of you. Who else could it be?”

“Don’t accuse people without evidence!” Adolf seemed unaware of how his words sounded ironic to Shen Siwei. “Amor already said his goodbyes to me and left the top floor before I went to see Father. As for me, in less than five minutes, I had to discuss the engagement with Father, commit murder, and stage the scene. How is that possible?”

“The two young masters are indeed unlikely suspects,” the security officer couldn’t help but interject. “Amor left the top floor at 10 o’clock, and there are records of his movement in the passageway. Adolf didn’t have enough time to commit the crime and is also unlikely to be the culprit.”

“But he could have ordered someone else,” Rita, who had been silent, suddenly spoke up.

“You shut up,” Adolf looked at Rita with a dark expression. “Father is dead, and you still want to drain our family’s blood. Let me tell you, it won’t happen!”

“Enough,” Shen Siwei interrupted the two. He turned to Adolf and said, “First, we can confirm that neither I nor Klet are the culprits. Do you have any objections to that?”

Adolf pursed his lips and reluctantly squeezed out two words, “I don’t.”

“Then, are you and Amor the culprits?” Shen Siwei asked again.

“Of course not!” Adolf furrowed his brow.

“Then that’s settled,” Shen Siwei clapped his hands and said to the security officer, “It’s suicide, case closed.”

“Uh…” The security officer looked hesitant and glanced at Adolf.

“Wait a minute,” Adolf took a deep breath and said to Shen Siwei, “This matter is not that simple. Don’t rush to announce it to the public. Give me some time to uncover the truth, will you?”

Contrary to his previous arrogance and aggressiveness, Adolf now made a reasonable proposal in a polite tone, which made Shen Siwei sigh in amazement. It seemed that using force and intimidation really worked.

Realizing that there was no point in continuing the argument, Shen Siwei nodded and said, “Fine.”

Adolf visibly relaxed and said, “Agreed.”

“Agreed,” Shen Siwei confirmed.

As it was already late at night, Shen Siwei and Klet decided not to stay longer. They left Miller’s study and returned to the bedroom where Shen Siwei had been staying.

The bottle of red wine and the wine glasses were still on the coffee table. As Klet sat down on the sofa, he asked, “Who were you drinking with?”

“Adolf, but I didn’t drink,” mentally exhausted, Shen Siwei sat next to Klet and fell into his embrace, “I’m so tired.”

“Do you want me to give you a massage?” Klet’s hand instinctively reached for Shen Siwei’s side waist.

” tempting, but let’s finish the important matters first,” Shen Siwei got up and sat in a kneeling position, asking Klet, “Did you capture everything I asked you to film?”

“Yes,” Klet activated his mini-computer and projected the secretly recorded video in mid-air. “The suicide rope, the suicide note, and the conversation where Adolf admits that we are not the culprits.”

“Send out the first two items,” Shen Siwei nestled back into Klet’s embrace once again, “And also let Leizhe know that the deep-sea energy station is still operational. It can be announced now.”

While Klet held onto Shen Siwei with one arm, he operated the communicator with the other and asked, “Didn’t you just agree with Adolf earlier by saying ‘agreed’?”

Shen Siwei did promise Adolf not to rush into announcing Miller’s death to the public, but that was simply because he didn’t want to waste any more words.

Comfortably nestled in Klet’s embrace, Shen Siwei closed his eyes and said, “What’s the point of talking about trust with someone like him?”

Anyone can play dirty tricks; it’s just a matter of seeing who’s better at it.
